Zachary Polk is a P-Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (supervisor) in the state of Missouri and holds a Master of Science (MS) from the COAMFTE accredited Marital and Family Therapy program at Loma Linda University. He has been extensively trained in Gestalt Therapy and is currently pursuing certification by Gestalt Associates Training, Los Angeles. Zachary also has extensive knowledge of Narrative Therapy and has trained at the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy.
Zachary has rich clinical experience with individuals, couples, and families on issues related to substance abuse/addiction, childhood trauma, and identity development (including LGBTQ+ issues). He also has a passion for working with couples and families experiencing intense conflict, which inspired him to pursue certification in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy, an evidence-based practice from his training at the International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy. By helping clients examine the ways they interact and attempt to meet their needs, Zach’s approach provides a unique opportunity for them to recognize and celebrate differences.
“All people have a desire to be comfortable with themselves, but that desire is often interrupted by life, which tends to dictate what we should be doing and how we should be doing it. In that light, I am interested in helping you uncover what may be getting in the way of you being you. My priority is to provide a safe environment in which to explore and try out new and authentic ways of relating to yourself and others, in the hopes of discovering the confidence, vitality, and compassion hidden within you.”
A favorite paraphrase from Arnold Beisser:
“Change occurs when people become who they are, not when they try to become who they are not.”
