Dr. Emily Schmittel holds a doctorate in Couple and Family Therapy from Michigan State University and is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) with nearly 10 years mental health experience. Emily has found that one of the most important ingredients to successful therapy is taking time to foster emotional safety, allowing clients to feel heard and validated. Emily’s approach is collaborative and supportive, yet direct when providing feedback. She integrates evidence-based practices such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Emotionally-Focused Therapy (EFT) with interventions to meet clients’ unique needs based on diversity concerns such as gender (including LGBTQ+), culture, and spirituality.
Emily is passionate about developing and supervising new therapists, and has developed curriculum for COAMFTE-Accredited Masters and Doctoral programs in Marriage & Family Therapy at Northcentral University. She has authored courses on a number of topics including child development, treatment of childhood disorders, and the practice of marriage and family therapy with older adults.
Emily sees both individuals and couples in therapy, and specializes in helping clients with interpersonal challenges, setting boundaries, navigating infidelity, managing intra-family conflict and more. For her doctoral dissertation, she researched cumulative trauma, providing her additional expertise in the treatment of post-traumatic symptomatology.
“It’s my priority to establish a truly safe environment in therapy to ensure that clients are able to address whatever challenges they’re facing. I’m so inspired by the courage it takes for people to transform themselves and their relationships, especially in light of the pain they may find along the way. My sincere hope is to be your partner in fostering a growing sense of meaning and satisfaction in your life.”
Favorite quote from Clarissa Pinkola Estes:
“When a great ship is in harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.”
